On June 24, 2024, NSFC Vice President Lan Yujie, met with the delegation from the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) of Brazil.

Dr. Lan said that China and Brazil have always been good friends marching forward together with common ideals despite being oceans apart. FAPESP is NSFC’s most important partner in Latin America. The two sides have carried out fruitful cooperation and will soon renew the MoU. It is hoped that in the future, we will continue to expand the funding areas, enrich the forms of joint activities, and increase the investment, to promote China-Brazil cooperation in science and research, and also improve the well-being of the people of both countries and the world.

Prof. Carlos Américo Pacheco, Executive Director of FAPESP, highly agreed with Dr. Lan’s remarks. He said that the two organizations have a solid foundation for cooperation, and share common interests in many areas, presenting broader prospects for cooperation. He hoped to work closely together with NSFC in the future to jointly support researchers from both countries to address major global challenges through international collaborations.

The two sides agreed to expand cooperation beyond existing areas of climate change and agriculture, to areas including sustainable development, biodiversity, marine science, energy, artificial intelligence, health, etc, to provide more opportunities for academic exchanges among early-career researchers, and to carry out more policy discussions and exchanges on topics as funding performance improvement and supporting SMEs through science, technology and innovation.

Dr. Yao Yupeng, Executive Deputy Director General of Department of Earth Sciences and Deputy Director General of Bureau of Planning and Policy, Dr. Zhang Yongtao, Acting Director General of Bureau of International Cooperation, and Prof. Márcio de Castro Silva Filho, FAPESP Scientific Director also attended the meeting.
